Summary Of BUILDING TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING OF PROCEDURES (the part of Article ” Problem before Procedure : System of Equation” by Kasi C.Allen)

There are so many problems in real life students can be system of equations. Many problems can be appear into class discussion and will bring a lot of conjecture and ideas from students to be solve. By real problems in the lives of the students themselves, the student will be required to create mathematics own ideas, not just memorize or repeat what the others have created, so students will be motivated to study hard. Because the mathematics not just theorem and procedure to solve the question in the exam, but can be applicated into real life and solve the real problems.
The following example is based on the Farmer’s Market problem, which appeared in Algebra an Algebraic Thinking in School Mathematics(Ferruci et al.2008).
At the local Farmer’s Market, you bought 7 apples and 4 peaches for $4.80. your friends bought 5 apples and 2 peaches for $3.00. when you got home, your sister asked how much each fruit cost. You don’t remember, but you can use mathematics to Figure it out.(Adapted from Ferruci et al.2008,p.196)
To solve this problem before formal istruction about solving system of linear equation, ususally use the Singapore model method without simbol, like the picture above

This student’s ideas taught a lesson about how importance of making space for mathematical creativity through problem solving. From the new equation from that picture can be simplified:
Cost of apple + Cost of peach = 90 cent
and the students conclusion : cost of an apple is 50 cent and a peach is 40 cent.
From this problem, by the matematical reasoning, there are many methods appear from the students to solved and highachieving students take note of their peer’s methods.

Inti pembicaraan diatas :
